Bridgeway Academy President Speaks at a seminar about character education in America
EMMAUS, PA, November 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ — Jessica Parnell, president of Bridgeway Academy, recently spoke at an event for Character Counts Week. Her presentation, entitled “What’s up with schools in America?” was part of the Communities Building Kids of Character seminar at KidsPeace. Devoted to serving the behavioral and mental wellness needs of youngsters, KidsPeace provides a range of residential programs, a exclusive psychiatric hospital, educational services, foster care and treatment programs in 19 states.
An expert in homeschooling, Parnell spoke on the incredible need for character education in America. Sharing some alarming statistics relating to character, education and violence in our nation’s schools, she emphasized the need for schools to bring back the values and training that were removed within the late 1950′s as school administrators feared that character education would be seen as religious instruction. She also outlined what Bridgeway Academy does to help parents train kids for responsibility and future success. Parnell also touched on why teaching is so much far more than academicsit is about preparing kids for their specific future and therefore the future of our nation.
The week of October 17 – 23rd was proclaimed National Character Counts week and endorsed locally by Governor Ed Rendell, Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham and Mayors Sal Panto, Ed Pawlowski and John Callahan. Character education encompasses many areas including ethics, anti-bullying, social and emotional learning skills and positive youth development. They are all about teaching kids how to become respectful, responsible citizens who will make good decisions now, and inside the future.
“Bridgeway Academy’s individualized approach to education fits perfectly with the message of Character Counts,” said Parnell. “Being an accredited home school, we provide parents with the tools to teach their children strong academics although also laying the foundation for each child to use their specific gifts and societies for the betterment of society.”
Building Kids of Character was a day-long seminar event at KidsPeace where various leaders with expertise in mentoring, education, community-building and more were invited to speak on those topics.
