Shamim Ahmed has worked as a teacher, educational director, assistant principal and supervisor

In 1979, she earned a post graduate degree in early childhood education from Lehman College, a senior college of The City University of New York. In recognition of her achievements, the Al Noor School presented Shamim with an award for outstanding services, and a head start program recognized her for outstanding service and dedication. She can be a member of ICNA and Why Islam.

Shamim has a passion for reading and writing prose and poetry in English and Urdu. Her work has been published in Noor Magazine and Anthology of American Poets. These days, she also incorporates inspirational Quranic verses into one-of-a-kind paintings, which she hopes to market. Twenty percent of the proceeds will probably be earmarked for charitable causes. In her spare time, she volunteers at local homeless shelters.

The “2011 Youth Empowerment Retreat” (YER) Initiative is the next logical step in addressing the chronic problems that youth and their parents have already been facing and organizers are looking to go beyond the traditional to develop a new model that address problems of truly empowering our youth to take on leadership positions after which provide them with actual opportunities to apply their new-found information.

Through the four-phrase program, 100-150 at-risk youth ages 8-18 within the Baltimore area will participate in a series of activities, workshops, community service initiatives, mentoring programs and training opportunities designed to provide each youth and parents with the understanding they want, the opportunity they’ve been searching for and also the opportunity to do more for themselves and their community. Additionally, leaders of youth- and family-focused community organizations will probably be engaged to work collaboratively to create partnerships and solutions towards the long-standing problems plaguing youth and their families.
